Elwin ‘Al’ Rollins Calgary, Alberta

Memorial service for Elwin Ira “Al” Rollins, 69, will be at 1 p.m. today at McInnis and Holloway Fish Creek Chapel in Calgary.

Mr. Rollins, a former amateur and professional hockey goaltender, died Saturday at home.

He was born in Vanguard, Saskatchewan.

He was a goaltender and played for the Edmonton Flyers in 1947 when they won the Allan Cup.

Mr. Rollins played professionally, first for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1950, when the team won the Stanley Cup. Mr. Rollins received the Vezina Trophy for outstanding goalie.

He also played for the Chicago Blackhawks and won the Hart Memorial Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player in the National Hockey League, during the 1953-54 season.

After his NHL career, he played for the Calgary Stampeders, Winnipeg Warriors and the Drumheller Miners.

He became the general manager and coach of the Spokane Jets in 1968. The Jets won the Allan Cup in the 1969-70 season, and the team was named the Inland Empire Team of the Year.

Mr. Rollins was also honored as the area’s Coach of the Year.

Mr. Rollins also coached in the Western Hockey League, when it was professional, the World Hockey Association and the Central Hockey League.

In 1982 he became the coach and general manager of the senior-amateur Spokane Chiefs.

He retired in 1992 and returned to Calgary.

Survivors include his former wife and his children’s mother, Bertha of Calgary; a daughter, Susan MacDonald of Calgary; two sons, Jerry of San Diego and David of Spruce Grove, Alberta; his second wife, Peggy Rollins of Spokane; two sisters, Aerial Broderick of Paris, Ky., and Vera Rushton of West Vancouver, British Columbia; and three grandchildren.

A tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park in his memory.

Dorothea (Brooks) Weber Spokane

Service for Dorothea Corinne (Brooks) Weber, 92, will be at 10 a.m. today at Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at the Quincy (Wash.) Valley Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Pepin County, Wis., she died Friday.

She moved to Spokane in 1910 and graduated from North Central High School. She received a teaching certificate from Cheney Normal School.

Mrs. Weber taught first- through eighth-grade students in a one-room school in Clayton, Wash., and first- through fourth-grade students at Five Mile School.

She married David Weber in 1925, and they moved to Quincy, Wash., where they were dryland wheat farmers. They briefly moved to Tuscon, Ariz., and returned to Spokane in 1947.

Mrs. Weber was a member of Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon, and was a member of the Five Mile Homemakers Club and garden clubs.

Her husband died in 1951.

She is survived by four daughters, Corinne Polley and Patrice Bledsoe, both of Spokane, Cathy Reasoner of Brazil and Nancy Moshier of El Paso, Texas; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Howard Rosenberry Lodi, Wis.

Service for Howard J. Rosenberry, 82, was held Thursday in Wisconsin. Edwardson-Atkinson Funeral Home in Wisconsin was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rosenberry, a former Coeur d’Alene resident, died July 22.

He was born in Rose Lake, Idaho, and graduated from Blake School in St. Paul., Minn., and the University of Minnesota.

Mr. Rosenberry worked as a journalist for lumber trade magazines for several years before operating the family farm in Wisconsin.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; six children, Elizabeth Lindner of Texas, Margaret Johnston of Pennsylvania, Sara Rosenberry of Virginia, Eli Sundby of Norway, Patricia Schmidt of Coeur d’Alene and Lois Loff; one sister, Mary Jean Ferris of Spokane; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Charles ‘Pat’ King Coeur d’Alene

Memorial Mass for Charles Patrick “Pat” King, 73, will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. King, who was born in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, died Friday.

He grew up and graduated from high school in Bonners Ferry and attended the University of Idaho.

He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II and flew 35 missions in Europe. After his military discharge, he returned to the University of Idaho and graduated with a degree in journalism.

Mr. King began his journalism career at the Union Bulletin in Walla Walla. He moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1948 and worked for The Coeur d’Alene Press. He also published newspapers in Wisconsin and Kalispell, Mont, returning to Coeur d’Alene in 1986 and becoming publisher of the Coeur d’Alene Press for one year before retiring.

Mr. King was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, the Lions Club, Elks Lodge and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; four sons, Patrick King of Anacortes, Wash., Robert and Daniel King, both of Coeur d’Alene, and Kevin King of Spokane; two daughters, Kris King of Post Falls and Betsy Hutchinson of Coeur d’Alene; two sisters, Judy Brady of Anchorage, Alaska, and Mary Lou Johnson of Renton, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Madonna Balch Spokane

Service for Madonna D. Balch, 82, was Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mrs. Balch, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Thursday.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

She is survived by one son, Kermit Balch of Yakima; two daughters, Madonna Cook of Bay Point, Calif., and Linda Morgan of Chattaroy; two brothers, Bernard and Robert Murphy, both of Spokane; a sister, Maxine Adams of Spokane; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

June Pettis Spokane

Service for June M. Pettis, 64, was Monday at Deer Park Seventh-day Adventist Church. Burial will be private.

Mrs. Pettis, a lifelong Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

She was a Kinman Business University graduate and worked as a travel agent at Four Seasons Travel from 1986 to 1995.

She married Verne Pettis in 1987.

She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Judith Simpson, Denise Meuler and Linda Pettis, all of Spokane; a son, Dick Pettis of Spokane; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Sister Marion Larrowe, S.P. Spokane

Rosary service for Sister Marion (Kathryn Helen) Larrowe, 74, will be at 7 p.m. today at Mount St. Joseph Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Larrowe, who died Saturday, was born in Portland.

She entered the Sisters of Providence Novitiate in Seattle in 1945 and professed her first vows in 1946 and her final vows in 1951.

She had a bachelor of science degree and a bachelor’s degree in medical records library science from Seattle University. She also had clinical pastoral education and was certified as a chaplain by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.

She worked in the health field in Oregon, Washington, Montana and Idaho.

She was the receptionist for Mount St. Joseph in the late 1960s and retired at Mount St. Joseph in 1988.

Survivors include two brothers, Peter Larrowe of El Jebal, Colo., and Charles Larrowe of East Lansing, Mich.

Jack Gross Spokane

Funeral Mass for John Carl “Jack” Gross, 70, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Charles Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Gross, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Friday.

He attended Gonzaga Prep and later graduated from North Central High School, which he attended after serving in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Willard Keith.

He worked at The SpokesmanReview as a photoengraver and retired in 1987 as superintendent after more than 45 years.

He married Mary Joan Day in 1952.

He was a member of St. Charles Parish and the Craftsman Club, a professional association that works to promote the graphic arts. He was also a volunteer with the Master Gardeners.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Christine Hanson and Mary Urbaniak, both of Spokane, and Catherine Floberg of Seattle; a son, Carl Gross of Spokane; and six grandchildren.

Hosea Lesnett Davenport, Wash.

Graveside service for Hosea B. Lesnett, 96, will be at 10 a.m. today at Wilbur (Wash.) Cemetery. Memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Davenport. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lesnett, who was born in Pennsylvania, died Friday.

He was a longtime Davenport resident and worked for Lincoln County. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Helen Lesnett; a son, Paul Lesnett of Seattle; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Davenport Senior Center.

Lewis Daniels Spokane

Service for Lewis D. Daniels, 78, will be at 3 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Daniels, who was born in Lambert, Mont., died Wednesday.

He moved to Spokane in the late 1920s and graduated from North Central High School.

He served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He worked for Curtiss Insulating Co. and then for Owens-Corning Fiberglass in sales.

He retired in 1986 as sales manager for the Northwest region.

Mr. Daniels was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Elks Lodge No. 228 and Spokane Rotary No. 21.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Clella Daniels; two sons, Jay Daniels of Sacramento, Calif., and John Daniels of Madison, Conn.; a daughter, Jennifer Neil of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Evelyn Curtiss, Blanche Holland and Agnes Prelwitz, all of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gonzaga University Scholarship Fund.

Arlene Thompson Cusick, Wash.

Memorial service for Arlene M. Thompson, 71, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Cusick High School Commons. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Thompson, who was born in Pullman, died Friday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High school.

In 1946, she married Harold Thompson and they settled at the CCA Ranch near Cusick.

Mrs. Thompson worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses and retired in 1991 as business manager for the Cusick School District after 23 years.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Raymond Thompson of Cusick and Tim Thompson of Spokane; three daughters, Teri Wiese of Spokane, Penny Pickerel of Cusick and Sally Jones of Lewiston; a brother, James Barbee of Bellevue, Wash.; a sister, Elaine Copeland of Anacortes, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

Helen Hawkins Spokane

Service for Helen C. Hawkins, 83, is set for 1 p.m. today at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mrs. Hawkins died Saturday.

She was a homemaker and had worked at the lunch counter at The Crescent.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Trinity Court No. 51 of the Order of the Amaranth, Daughters of the Nile and the Shadle COPS.

Her husband, Donald Hawkins, died in 1980.

She is survived by two sons, Larry Hawkins of Spokane and Ronald Hawkins of Issaquah, Wash.; a brother, Ted Neist of Salem, Ore.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Order of the Amaranth or Shadle C.O.P.S.

Richard Donahue Spokane

Graveside service for Richard E. Donahue, 66, will be at 2 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Donahue, who was born in Merrimac, Mass., died Thursday.

He served in the Air Force for 21 years.

Mr. Donahue moved to Spokane in 1974 and had worked for the Postal Service as a clerk.

He served in the Korean War and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 51.

Survivors include three sons, Donald, Robert and Steven Donahue, all of Spokane; a daughter, Rhonda Day of Wasilla, Alaska; and two grandchildren.

Reta Barton Pullman

No service will be held for Reta Ann Barton, 89, at her request. Kimball Funeral Home of Pullman is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Barton who was born in Palouse, Wash., died Wednesday.

She retired after 25 years as a cashier at the Oriental Cafe.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, Dwight, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Harvey Barton of Zillah, Wash., and Paul Barton of Garfield, Wash.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Moose Lodge in Pullman.
