Grass Burning Hotline Starts

From Staff And Wire Reports

With the grass burning season about to begin in North Idaho, a toll-free “smoke hotline” has been started by the Idaho Division of Environmental Quality.

DEQ started the hotline to record residents’ concerns about grass burning. People affected by the grass burning season can call (800) 445-4656 to register their comments and complaints. Coeur d’Alene-area residents may call (208) 769-2863.

The phone line will be answered through the end of September.

Grass growers may start burning fields on Thursday - weather permitting. They have 14 days to complete burning within a 45-day season. The 45-day window starts with the ignition of the first field.

Farmers may burn on weekdays only and when weather conditions exist for good smoke dispersion. They will not burn on Fridays, weekends or Labor Day.

Particulate levels will be measured throughout the area to ensure burning is curtailed before federal and state particulate levels are exceeded.
