Mugging Victim Shoots Attackers
The last time Dorothy Newton was robbed, the mugger took all her money and then shot her. This time, she did the shooting.
Newton, 41, and her 28-year-old niece, Doris Matthews, were strolling toward Newton’s apartment Thursday evening when they saw two young men approaching them.
One pulled a gun, leveled it at Newton, and demanded her purse. She handed over the bag, and the robbers took about $20. Then they threatened Matthews and told her to remove her jewelry. Then two more young men approached, and grabbed the groceries the women had put on the ground.
Newton then told the robbers she thought she might have more money in her purse. She unzipped it and pulled out a gun.
“I said, ‘Take this’ and shot him,” she said.
Police said she fired five rounds, hitting the two original muggers, who did not get off a shot. All four fled, but police tracked down the two who were wounded, one critically.
Newton said she was shot and robbed two years ago.
