Parenting Workshop To Include Kids

Kids.

What can parents do for them? When should parents give them their space?

Zion Lutheran Church will give parents a chance to examine those and other questions next week. The church is holding a free parenting workshop on June 9 at the West Valley High School auditorium from 3 to 6 p.m.

This isn’t going to be a one-way conversation, though, the Rev. Ken Carlson said. Kids aged 7 and older are invited to participate, too.

Child care will be provided for children 6 and younger.

Carlson said parts of the workshop will include everyone. At other times, kids will form their own groups to discuss their issues and concerns.

It’s almost like a build-it-yourself seminar.

“We want to address the real needs of people,” Carlson said. He intends to take the feedback he gets from parents and children and use it to organize future workshops. The ideas will also be used to shape daily church life there.

The seminar is free and open to everyone, though, church-goer or not.

Carlson said speakers at the workshop include Bob Newcomb, a Coeur d’Alene-based family counselor, and professionals from West Valley High School and Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Baha’i leaders named for Valley

Members of the Baha’i faith in the Valley recently elected nine people to serve as its local spiritual assembly.

The Baha’i religion has no clergy - the spiritual assembly serves much the same purpose, though.

“They direct affairs of the faith for their area, they are in charge of making sure feast and holy days are observed,” said Joe Urlacher, one of the recently elected assembly members.

The religion was founded in 1844 in Iran by Mirza Ali Muhammad.

He said the prophecies of all religions had been fulfilled already, and that a new unified faith was needed.

He then assigned Husayn Ali, a young Persian, the title of Baha’u’llah, which means “glory of God.”

Baha’u’llah was exiled from Iran to Palestine and died there in 1892.

Members of the Baha’i faith follow the writings of Baha’u’llah. The faith’s message centers around the oneness of humankind and the unity of all religion.

The Valley Baha’i community typically meet in members’ homes.

Members elected to the local spiritual assembly are David Simmons, Geralyn West, Brenda Beaulieu, Vic Bertis, Joe Urlacher, Roger Olsen, Marsha Urlacher, Jilla Simmons and Steve Beaulieu.

They will serve until April 21, 1997.
