U.S. To Host Women’s Cup

Compiled From Wire Services

The United States has been awarded the right to stage the third FIFA Women’s World Championship, the soccer tournament to be played in five East Coast cities in June and July of 1999.

The first championship was held in China in 1991 and won by the U.S. team, which finished third at the next championship, in Sweden in 1995.

Japan and South Korea, neighbors with a long history of bad blood, will be the first countries to co-host a joint World Cup soccer championship when they stage it together in 2002.

The animosity between the two neighbors dates back to Japan’s 35-year occupation of the Korean peninsula, which ended after World War II.
