Cincinnati Tames Atlanta, Maddux

From Wire Reports

National League

Mark Portugal pitched seven innings Saturday for his first win and the Cincinnati Reds beat Greg Maddux and the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in Cincinnati.

Cincinnati broke a streak of 12 consecutive losses to the Braves, including a sweep in the N.L. championship series last October. The Reds’ last win also was over Maddux, last Aug. 9 in Atlanta.

The four-time Cy Young winner is just 10-11 career against the Reds, who were one of two teams to beat him in the regular season last year.

Mets 4, Dodgers 3 New York

Pete Harnisch, making his first start since serving an eight-game suspension for fighting, overcame a shaky first and pitched New York past Los Angeles.

Harnisch (4-3) allowed three runs on four hits in seven innings. He walked three, all in the first when the Dodgers scored twice.

Cards 5, Astros 4 (10)

St. Louis Tom Pagnozzi hit a solo homer with one out in the bottom of the 10th to give St. Louis a come-from-behind win over Houston.

Pagnozzi hit a 3-1 pitch off Xavier Hernandez (0-2) for his fourth homer of the season as the Cardinals beat Houston for the fifth straight time.

Cubs 5, Marlins 4 (10) Miami

Scott Servais hit a solo homer in the 10th as Chicago beat Florida.

Turk Wendell (4-1) gave up one unearned run in three innings. He struck out the side in the 10th.

Al Leiter, honored before the game for pitching the Marlins’ first no-hitter May 11, took a 3-0 lead into the eighth. But the Cubs, held to two hits at that point, rallied for four runs.

Expos 5, Giants 1 Montreal

Jeff Fassero pitched 7-1/3 strong innings and F.P. Santangelo hit a three-run homer as Montreal beat San Francisco.

The Expos won their third in a row. The Giants have lost three straight and seven of nine.

Rockies 2, Pirates 0 Pittsburgh

Dante Bichette’s two-run single in the second, the only hit Paul Wagner allowed in seven innings, led Colorado to a win.

The combined shutout by Kevin Ritz, Steve Reed, Lance Painter and Bruce Ruffin was the Rockies’ first this season after they had one last season. Pittsburgh became the last league team to be shut out.

Padres 8, Phillies 3 Philadelphia

Steve Finley hit a grand slam and Ken Caminiti had a three-run homer as San Diego defeated Philadelphia.

Sean Bergman (3-5) pitched the Padres to their eighth win in 10 games. He gave up two runs and five hits in five innings.

Keeping their word

As promised, the Florida Panthers-Pittsburgh Penguins NHL playoff game was shown on the scoreboard at Joe Robbie Stadium between innings. It came on for the first time following the second inning and was met with loud cheers from the crowd of 30,133.

When it was taken off as the third inning started, the crowd booed. A similar routine ensued for the rest of the evening. The Panthers beat the Penguins 3-1 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final, which ended moments before the Cubs-Marlins game finished.

Clearing the bases

Mets catcher Brent Mayne is 0 for 11 in throwing out base stealers. … The Giants placed second baseman Robbie Thompson on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 30, with a neck injury. He was replaced on the roster by infielder Kim Batiste, who was recalled from Triple-A Phoenix. … The Giants, second in the league in homers, haven’t homered in seven games, their longest drought of the season.

The Padres have been in first place for 60 straight days, their longest run at the top since spending more two months there from May 7-July 12, 1985.

Houston’s Jeff Bagwell has six homers, six doubles and 20 RBIs in his last 13 games.
