Klm Expected To Place Boeing Order
Still another European order for The Boeing Co.’s popular 737 is expected to be announced today by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
The airline, which already operates 27 737s, would join European charter carriers and others in ordering the next-generation 737 models - the 737-600, -700 and -800.
Neither Boeing nor KLM would confirm reports from the Netherlands that an order for up to 13 of the models, worth at least $500 million, will be announced, along with bookings for three Fokker 70-seat jetliners.
KLM will report annual earnings and discuss fleet details at a news conference today. It has said it wants to strengthen its European market share and is planning a new strategy to increase its capacity there.
“They are very interested in the new version of the 737, especially the (largest, 180-seat) -800,” Benno Baksteen, chairman of the Dutch pilots association VNV, told Bloomberg Business News.
Scandinavian Air Systems, Lauda Air and several smaller European carriers already have ordered the new 737 models.
