So Nice That You’re Twice Blessed
Dear Nancy: This is the second dream I have had about newborn babies who are advanced and exceptional in their development. I’m hoping you can help me understand these dreams. - Diana
I have just delivered twin babies, a boy and a girl. They are only 1 hour old. They are large (about 9-month size) and can crawl and talk. They are plump, healthy and strong.
Both the babies are lying in their beds comfortably. I am going somewhere and I ask them if they want to go with me. The girl says, “No, I just want to lie here and relax and read.” She has a baby book in her hands.
Dear Diana: Dreams of giving birth symbolize emerging aspects of yourself with all the potentials inherent within those aspects.
Twins can represent balance and wholeness and also can illustrate duality. For instance, in your dream, the babies are male and female. These are opposites and can illustrate both sides of a balanced personality. At one end of the spectrum is the feminine energy which is nurturing, intuitive and open.
At the other end is the male energy which is assertive, intellectual and practical.
Both the babies are developed beyond their age. The baby girl has already developed a strong and independent personality. She knows what she wants to do and expresses it.
What new activities and attitudes are you giving birth to (expressing) in your life? What can you do to nurture and develop these new parts of yourself?
This was a wonderful dream, Diana, one that shows the profound changes you are making.
Tips for readers
Dream incubation is a key method you can use to gain access to your unconscious specifically for the purpose of answering questions about your life.
Before going to sleep simply ask yourself for a dream about a particular issue or person in your life. In the morning, try to relate your dream to the question. How does it fit? Does the dream propose a course of action or does it evoke more questions?
Some favorite incubation questions:
What should I be concentrating on right now in my life?
Should I stay in this relationship? Is my relationship with (person’s name) good for me?
What kind of work should I be doing? Should I quit/ take this particular job?
I would like inspiration for my project/painting/ writing, etc.
Before your birthday and for the new year you might try asking:
What will this year bring?
You must have a genuine interest in the question or subject for dream incubation to work. If you don’t have a dream the first night, keep asking; you’ll have one. Then, send it to me!
This column is intended as entertainment. But psychologists who work with clients’ dreams say that dreams can hold a tremendous amount of significance; a particularly disturbing or repetitive dream may indicate the need to see a therapist.
