Rogers Fills Two Coaching Positions

An alum and a highly successful prep coach from California have been hired to fill wrestling and volleyball coaching vacancies at Rogers High School.

Walt Arnold, who competed at Rogers for retiring Pirates coach Ken Pelo, was named his successor Monday, activities coordinator Jan Truant announced.

Arnold coached at Lake Stevens, Wash.; Grand Union, Ore.; and Lakewood, Wash., before joining the Rogers faculty this past year. He is active in the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association, serving as secretary on the executive board.

Anna Vanderpool takes over the Rogers volleyball program after going 28-0 in league the last three years at Pacific High School in San Bernadino, Calif.

She also coached at her alma mater, Cajon High in San Bernadino, after playing at University of the Pacific, where she was a team captain. During her career, UOP finished fourth, second and fourth in the NCAA Division I championships.

Arnold is married and he and his wife are expecting their first child. Vanderpool is married and has two sons.

Legion baseball

The North Stars made the most of two hits in overcoming the Bandits 8-6 in the first game of a AAA American Legion double-header at Jackson Field before unloading 10 hits in a 7-5 second-game win.

Limited to two singles by the Bandits’ Eric Sandberg in the opener, the North Stars parlayed them with 12 walks and four Bandits errors for the victory. Sam Hess drove in three runs with an RBI single, a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.

Sandberg was 3 for 4 with a solo home run, two runs scored and three RBIs.

In the second game, Brent Reeves slugged a two-run homer in a five-run sixth that overcame a 5-2 Bandits lead. Jim Geyer had two RBIs for the North Stars and Justin McKitterick drove in two for the Bandits.

Pro-Am golf

Indian Canyon pro Gary Lindeblad scorched the back side at Hangman Valley with a 31, but it earned no better than a share of the low score in the Athletic Round Table Pro-Am.

Lindeblad, who went out in 36 en route to a 5-under round of 67, was a stroke better than any other pro, but amateur Todd Pence of The Fairways matched him with a 33-34.

Matt Bunn of Spokane Country Club, Steve Prugh of Manito and Mark Gardner of The Creek at Qualchan matched nines of 34 for 68s behind Lindeblad and five others had 69s as the 16 cashing pros were all under par.

John Cook of Avondale was the second low amateur with a 36-34-70.

Net leaders were Paul Cameron, Qualchan, 0-8 handicap, 63; Scott Stephens, Avondale, 9-13, 65; and Tom Zenahlik, Hayden Lake, 14-30, 62.

Liske on hold

While rumors circulate around Moscow that University of Idaho athletic director Pete Liske is a shoo-in for the University of Toledo athletic director post, reports from that school are strikingly different.

The word in Moscow is that it is Liske’s job, but athletic personnel in Toledo have not heard if that is true.

“If that’s the case, I have not heard that,” said Rod Brandt, assistant athletic director/ sports information director at Toledo.

Brandt says each one of the four finalists has a full day of meetings with coaches, athletic staff, students and the steering committee before a decision is made.
