James Fleming Chooses Air Force From Nominations
James Fleming, a 1996 Mead High School graduate, received nominations to attend the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., and the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., from Rep. George Nethercutt.
Fleming also received a nomination to the U.S. Air Force Academy from Sen. Slade Gorton.
He has chosen to attend the Air Force Academy. He is the son of Doug and Kitt Fleming.
The University of Idaho School of Communications’ student advertising team retained its title as regional championships in the American Advertising Federation’s District XI student competition held in Yakima last month.
The team defeated eight other regional schools and moved on to represent the Pacific Northwest in the collegiate World Series of Advertising earlier this month.
Inland Northwest team members are Jill Pittman, of Rosalia, Wash., and Greg Kummer, of Othello, Wash. Professor Mark Sacrist was faculty adviser. , Students of Tessa Williams’ Ballet Classique won several awards during their tests of the American Academy Awards. They won 17 bronze medals, 11 bronze medals with distinction, 12 silver medals, three silver medals with distinction, and five gold medals.
The winners were Lindsey Witter, 9 years old, level five; Prasti Vinje, level seven, high school; Jaren Tichy, level seven, high school; Wendy Palmer, junior high; and Aaron Grant, gold with distinction, level seven, high school.
Grant also received a full scholarship for summer school in Vassar, N.Y.
Bob Carter is a hero - again.
The past potentate of the Shriners performed the Heimlich Maneuver on a choking woman at a recent Scottish Rite dinner, dislodging a piece of meat from her throat.
Earlier this spring, Carter also performed the maneuver on someone else who choked during a lodge dinner with the Manito group.
Navy Midshipman Ryan D. Collins, Pullman, received a grade of outstanding on his Physical Readiness Test and with it, a Certificate of Excellence. Collins is assigned with Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit, University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho.
Fourteen students have won PaceSetter Awards for exemplary career preparation work from the Spokane-area Professional-Technical Administrators and the Spokane Teachers Credit Union.
The students and their high schools are: Kimberly Baird and Crystal Weatherbee, Ferris; Jennifer (Lybbert) Chea and Ryan Gallagher, Spokane Skills Center; Jessica Coombs and Eric Michael Davis, University; Rhea Cox, North Central; Tricia Rae Fry, Pullman; Phuoc Xuan Nguyen and Brenda Schluter, Rogers; Rachel Sherwood, Gloria Wood and Christopher Bush, Shadle Park; and Ken Voss, Mead.
Eastern Washington Business Education Association announced its 1995-96 Outstanding Business Student Awards: Patricia Anderson, Spokane Community College; Aaron Appel, Davenport (Wash.) High School; Mindy Bareither and Jenny Tiegs, both of Liberty High School; Dana Garrido,Spokane Falls Community College; Dave Johnson, Central Valley High School; and Dustin Scalise, North Central High School.
EWBEA Scholarship Awards went to Gayle Olson and Judith Lozo, both of Eastern Washington University.
