Ticketmaster Outlets Moving To Pay Less

Ticketmaster will switch its Spokane outlets from DJ’s Sound City to Pay Less Drug Stores by the end of the month.

This is important news for ticket-buyers, especially those interested in Gorge events and all Seattle music and sports events, which are handled exclusively by Ticketmaster. For years, DJ’s has been the sole Ticketmaster seller in Spokane.

But Ticketmaster has arranged for a switch to four Pay Less locations sometime during the last week of June. Those locations are: University City, Northgate, downtown (Parkade Plaza) and Southgate (on Regal).

Pay Less stores have always been Ticketmaster’s primary outlets in most of the rest of the state. Also, these Pay Less outlets, unlike the three DJ’s locations, will accept charge card purchases. Keep an eye out for more information as the switch gets nearer. Ticketmaster promises that two big new concert announcements will accompany the switch, which will take place sometime between about June 24 and June 27.

Until then, DJ’s Sound City is still the place to go to buy tickets for The Gorge and other Ticketmaster events.

Big new concerts?

And what might those “big new concerts” be? Well, nobody’s saying yet, but odds are that it will include at least one of two big summer festivals, the HORDE Festival and that other festival you may have heard of that begins with an L.

Fat guys in spandex , My Spotlight pledge: To bring you all the latest news about big sweaty guys in briefs.

I speak of the World Wrestling Federation. After a four-year hiatus, the WWF will return to Spokane on July 24 at 7:30 p.m. for a nine-bout card at the Spokane Arena.

The highlight, if that’s the word I want, will be a “title match” between champion Shawn Michaels and somebody named Vader.

The rest of the card will include, well, a whole bunch of guys with nicknames, including “Snake,” “Spark Plugg” and “Wild Man.”

Tickets go on sale Monday at 10 a.m. at all G&B Select-a-Seat outlets.

Best of Broadway tickets

Season tickets have been on sale for a while, but beginning Wednesday at 10 a.m. tickets for individual shows in the The Best of Broadway series go on sale through G&B Select-a-Seat outlets.

The 10th anniversary season is star-studded, assuming you consider Jerry Lewis a star. I certainly do, although I’m not sure “star” is a big enough word.

Here’s the lineup of shows:

“How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” starring Ralph Macchio, Sept. 13-15.

“Damn Yankees,” starring Jerry Lewis, Oct. 15-18.

“Babes in Toyland,” Dec. 11.

“Man of La Mancha,” starring Robert Goulet, Jan. 8-11.

“Singin’ in the Rain,” Jan. 18-19.

“Winnie the Pooh,” Feb. 9.

“Grease,” Feb. 18-21.

“Ain’t Misbehavin’,” April 8.

“Kiss of the Spider Woman,” April 28-May 1. The best ArtFest

ArtFest ‘96 at the Cheney Cowles Museum was the best attended ever, thanks to three days of perfect weather, May 31-June 2. The museum estimated crowds of about 25,000 people each day.

The 58 artists in the juried show reported that sales of their artwork were up 25 percent over last year.

It was another job well done by the museum staff, the Spokane Art School and more than 300 volunteers.

Kathy Mattea at Sandpoint

Kathy Mattea, one of the finest of the new breed of country singers, has been added to the Festival at Sandpoint lineup.

Mattea fills the final Mainstage slot, Aug. 9, 7:30 p.m. This will be the second time she has played Sandpoint. I can tell you from personal experience that her first appearance, in 1993, was outstanding.

Tickets are $19 for general admission, or $26.50 reserved. A 20 percent discount applies for this concert, and for all concerts, if you order your tickets before June 21, toll-free at 1-888-265-4554 or from the Sandpoint area, (208) 265-4554.

The Festival has also added blues artist Kevin Moore, better known as Keb’ Mo’, to the Panida Theatre lineup for Aug. 1, 7 p.m. Tickets are $15, available at the above number.

That Hey Verne! guy

Verne Windham, familiar as the KPBX-FM classical music director, has been named artistic director of Connoisseur Concerts’ outdoor Mozart series.

Windham will be in charge of the two performances of “Mozart on a Summer’s Eve” at Duncan Gardens in Manito Park, July 23-24, and “Family Mozart: A Musical Experience for All Ages” on the grounds of the Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute on Aug. 2.

For a free brochure about the series, call Connoisseur Concerts at 326-4942.
