Aids Activists Protest Animal Rights Rally
The man who made history last year by receiving an experimental AIDS treatment using a baboon’s bone marrow was picked up by authorities Thursday for blocking traffic at an animal rights rally.
Jeff Getty of San Francisco said he and eight others were released after paying a $15 fine for obstructing traffic outside the U.S. Air Arena, where the rally took place.
Authorities said about 25 demonstrators from the AIDS activist group, ACT UP, blocked the entrance to the arena.
“I was there to demonstrate and educate America that when you give money to animal rights activists, you’re giving money for them to stop AIDS, Alzheimers’ and cancer research,” Getty said.
