New Talks Announced With Mexican Rebels
Talks to resolve a peasant uprising in southern Mexico will resume next month, mediators announced Friday, ending a three-week impasse caused by political and military tensions.
After a meeting with rebel leaders in this jungle village, haggard mediators announced talks would resume July 8.
Negotiations stalled when Zapatista rebels called off a June 5 meeting because of heightened tensions: a judge had sentenced two Zapatista supporters to prison on terrorism charges, and there had been increased paramilitary activity and election-related violence in Chiapas state, the rebels’ stronghold.
