Green Takes Race
David Green took advantage of brother Jeff’s misfortune to win the Carolina Pride-Advance Auto 250 NASCAR Busch Grand National stock car race at Myrtle Beach Speedway (S.C.).
The brothers dominated the 250-lap race on the .538-mile track and were the only leaders during the event. David Green prevailed after his brother lost the lead on lap 216 while pitting under caution.
Jeff Green, who led laps 194 to 216, fell from first to fourth on the pit stop. David Green, who had been running second, took the lead and wasn’t headed again, winning by .95 seconds over Jeff Purvis.
Chad Little of Spokane finished 16th to earn $5,090.
Immediately after a brief, unplanned detour into the grass infield, Italian Alex Zanardi used a late fast lap to win the pole for the IndyCar Budweiser-G.I. Joe’s 200.
Zanardi, a past Formula One driver in his rookie IndyCar season, is on the pole for the second time this year. His first was for the Rio 400 in mid-March, and his fourth-place finish in that race is his best of the season.
Zanardi’s Reynard Honda had a top lap of 117.209 mph, just off the Portland International Raceway record of 117.614 set by Jacques Villenueve last year.
Scott Pruett lasted only 11 minutes in Saturday’s qualifying session because the engine blew in his Lola Ford Cosworth. Still, Pruett wound up alongside Zanardi on the front row at 117.021 mph.
Driver Alessandro Zampedri was released from an Indianapolis hospital, 28 days after a crash on the final lap of the Indianapolis 500 nearly severed his left foot.
Zampedri declined media requests for interviews as he left Methodist Hospital, said Lynn Lehman, the hospital’s night administrator.
