Regulators Approve Wwp Experiment
Washington regulators Wednesday approved a Washington Water Power Co. plan that will allow its largest industrial and commercial customers to buy power from other suppliers.
The two-year experiment will enable the company, its customers and competitors to test a free-market environment like that many utility industry observers expect to emerge within the next few years.
Starting Sept. 1, customers can buy as much as 30 percent of the electricity they need from other utilities or brokers. WWP will collect a fee for delivering that power to the customer’s facilities.
The Spokane-based company has estimated its potential revenue losses at $1 million, a sum it said would be absorbed by its shareholders.
Rates to residential customers will not be affected.
Action on a similar proposal in Idaho has been delayed.
