Usisl Honors Shadow Forward Higgins

Spokane Shadow forward Zane Higgins was named USISL national player of the week after scoring six points during two weekend wins.

Higgins leads the Shadow with 22 points and is tied with Jim Martinson with a team-best seven goals. Martinson, who also had six points over the weekend, was selected to the USISL team of the week.

Football

Five players from the Greater Spokane League - including Jeff Allen, Rick Giampietri and Giorgio Usai from league champion Central Valley - will try to help the East team keep its winning streak going in the East West All-Star game.

The 32nd annual game is Friday at Everett Memorial Stadium. The East has won the last three games, including 17-14 last year in Spokane.

Other GSL players are Adam Morris of Mead and Mike Roberg of University. Frontier League players are Jesse Ewell of East Valley and Bart Olson of Cheney.

Hockey

The Spokane Chiefs selected Marian Cisar and Yegor Mikhailov Wednesday in the Canadian Hockey League import player draft.

Cisar, 18, from the Slovak Republic, was the Los Angeles Kings’ second-round selection in the NHL entry draft earlier this month. Mikhailov has played for the first division Red Army team in Russia.

Golf

Scott Krieger of Portland shot a 3-under-par 69 and took the incomplete first-round lead in the $74,000 Sunriver Oregon Open.

Krieger played early on a weather-plagued day that saw barely more than half the field finish their rounds over the 7,227-yard course. Among those not finishing their rounds, Clint Wallman of Spokane was 2-under through nine.

Wandermere’s Darin Vaughan carded a 72.

Chikage Niway, 19, a Japanese exchange student at South Puget Community College, leads by three in the Washington Women’s Amateur tournament after a 77 for a 151 total at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club in Langley.

Jennifer Hatley of Manito, who followed an 88 with an 82, is 19 behind Niway.

AAA Legion baseball

Eric Sandberg scored twice and drove in two runs as the Bandits (4-6) beat the Blue Devils (7-4) at Jackson Field, 5-2.
