Brighten Your Yard With A Lighthouse
This lighthouse project not only adds a nautical flair to even the most landlocked yard, it actually provides light.
Designed to be topped with a solar-powered outdoor pathway light, it functions exactly like the real thing, making it a perfect beacon for a shadowy porch or walkway. And there are no wires to install or energy bills to pay.
A perfect summer project and inexpensive to build, the lighthouse is cut from one 4-by-8 sheet of plywood. Other materials include birch pegs, screws, nails, glue, paint and a solar-powered outdoor light (available at most home centers) for the top.
Ideal for woodworkers of all skill levels, the project features mostly straight cuts, full-size traceable patterns for the curved and bevel cuts, and modular construction techniques. The base, tower and top are assembled separately, painted, stacked and fastened together with screws.
As a crowning touch, the solar-powered light is placed in a hole on top and fastened with screws.
The completed lighthouse stands about 5 feet tall and is 22 inches in diameter at the base.
The Lighthouse plan, No. 860, is $7.95 and includes complete step-by-step directions with 15 photos, full-size traceable patterns, exploded diagrams, a materials list, cutting schedule and a color chart to aid in painting.
A package of decorative outdoor plans, No. C112, is $17.95 and includes this project plus plans for a wishing well and a Dutch windmill. A catalog picturing hundreds of projects is $3.95.
Prices include postage and handling (for first-class mail, add $1 per item up to $3 maximum).
