The Washington Huskies must find a replacement for running backs coach Al Lavan, who is returning to the NFL as an assistant under Ted Marchibroda in Baltimore.

Lavan has been Washington’s running backs coach since the 1992 season. He was the running backs coach under Tom Landry in Dallas from 1980-88 and in San Francisco from 1989-90. He also coached in Atlanta in 1975-76.

Suspended Idaho State basketball player Shabaka Lands has been fined and placed on probation after pleading guilty to shoplifting a $44 pair of gloves from a local mall.

Magistrate Ted Israel placed Lands, 21, on probation for six months, ordered him to do 20 hours community service and barred him from entering the mall where the shoplifting occurred. Lands, a senior guard from Indianapolis, was the Bengals’ starting point guard last season and this year until he was suspended.
