Snow Sport Report

Compiled By Vince Dice

Alpine skiing

Schweitzer is senior-friendly next week. The Snowmasters Classic offers a $275 package including four days of skiing, meals, wine-tasting and other events for people age 55 and over Sunday through next Friday. Info: Gail Fendley, (800) 831-8810.

If you are not-so-senior, try Lookout’s weekly free ski school for kids age 5-17. School is in session every Saturday with beginner classes at 10 a.m. and intermediate and expert sessions at 11:30. Info: (208) 777-7701.

The First Security Winter Games continue this week at Silver with snowboarding events. Info: 783-1111, ext. 316.

Nordic skiing

This is probably the last chance to ski Priest Lake this season. An expected warm spell might make this the last grooming weekend.

Newport is back. After impending doom last week due to rising temperatures, the park got 3 more inches last weekend and skiing on the Geo Trail is good for touring and skate-skiing. Wolfe remains closed.

Mount Spokane fixed its groomer just in time for good skiing, but keep an eye out for some wind debris, particularly on south-facing trails. Snowshoe conditions are also great, but don’t do it on the cross country or downhill runs. Ask a ranger about the best snowshoe areas.

Snowmobiling

Speaking of Mount Spokane, one ranger reported the best snowmobiling conditions of the year are right now. After getting considerable snow two weeks ago, they have groomed more in the past week and a half than in most of January and December combined.
