Gwen Torrence followed her spouse’s advice to perfection, and the result was an American record.

“My husband (Manley Waller) told me to run a 22.7, and that’s what I did,” Torrence after clocking 22.70 seconds during a heat of the USA Mobil Indoor Championships before a sparse crowd at the Georgia Dome. Torrence’s record was one of two set The other came in the women’s pole vault, where Stacy Dragila cleared 13 feet, 5-1/4 inches, breaking the mark of 13-1-1/2 she set last month at Reno, Nev.

Tennessee won the men’s relay in 9:43.77, and Auburn took the women’s race in 11:19.69.
