Hampton Signs San Francisco’s $16.45 Million Offer Sheet
Rodney Hampton, the New York Giants’ career rushing leader, signed a six-year, $16.45 million offer with the San Francisco 49ers Saturday.
Hampton is a transition player, and the Giants can retain his services by matching the 49ers’ offer within seven days. Reports in New York this past week indicated the team would match, but general manager George Young has made no official comment.
The Giants might have a tough time matching the offer, which includes a $3.6 million signing bonus and a no-trade clause to Aug. 1.
The Miami Dolphins decided late Friday not to match the Philadelphia Eagles’ five-year $16.5 million offer sheet for free-agent cornerback Troy Vincent.
The decision not to pursue Vincent came after Dolphins GM Eddie Jones tried and failed to restructure the offer sheet in Miami’s favor.
