Cheney Hoop Fans Prepare For Double Dip
Cheney basketball fans won’t have to wait long between Blackhawks games at the State AA high school basketball tournament.
The Cheney girls open the tournament with the 9 a.m. game at the Tacoma Dome on Wednesday and the boys hit the floor at 1:30.
The girls (20-4), making their second straight appearance, face Arlington (15-9). A second-round opponent could be Chief Sealth, which the Blackhawks faced in the second round last year on their way to the semifinals.
Injuries hit Cheney in the semifinal game and they lost to Franklin and lost in the trophy game to finish sixth. The Blackhawks are making their sixth state appearance.
Defending champion and pre-tournament favorite Blanchet (24-1) is in the 9:30 nightcap against White River.
The Cheney boys, back at state for the first time since 1991, meet Lyden (13-6). The Blackhawks (14-11) have won four straight after losing their opener of the District 7 tournament.
Their second-day opponent will be Selah (19-6) or Blanchet (20-5).
Pre-tournament co-favorite O’Dea (23-2) is in the last game against Mark Morris. The other favorite, White River (22-2), which lost to Franklin in the title game last year, is also in the bottom bracket and faces Bellingham (15-9) at 5 p.m.
