James ‘Marvin’ Barrier Spokane
Service for James M. “Marvin” Barrier, 81, is set for 10 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Mr. Barrier, who died Saturday, was born in Ottumwa, Iowa.
He grew up in Ingamar, Mont., and moved to Spokane in 1922 with his family.
He graduated from North Central High School and Northwestern Business College.
He worked in the Wallace/Kellogg area, working as a fireman, a bookkeeper for mining operations, a cafe operator and a candy maker. While in the Silver Valley, he helped establish the Lookout Pass Ski Area in the early 1930s.
He also operated Marvin’s Cafe in Kalispell, Mont., after he moved his family there in 1954.
In 1968 he returned to Spokane and worked for the Washington State Liquor Control Board, managing a state liquor store.
He is survived by wife of 27 years, Elizabeth; two daughters, Janice Erickson of Portland and Brenda Probert of Kalispell, Mont.; two sons, James Barrier of Anaheim Hills, Calif., and William Barrier of Spokane; one stepson, Thomas Sharkey of Ontario; three sisters, Zelda Jacobson and Alyce Saunders, both of Spokane, and Gladys Philley of Oceanside, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
Anna Sherman Spokane
Graveside service for Anna M. Sherman, 16, will be at 3 p.m. today at Pines Cemetery. Memorial service is planned for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Eagle’s Nest Ministries International with Pastors Timothy Sherman and Doug Sherman co-officiating. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Miss Sherman, who died Thursday in an auto accident, was born in Hot Springs, Ark.
She had lived in Spokane for three years and was a student at West Valley High School.
She is survived by her parents, Timothy and Deborah Sherman at the home; two brothers, Doug Sherman of Moses Lake and Samuel Sherman of Spokane; four sisters, Jessica Edmonson of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Sessi Wagner of Hot Springs, Ark., Atoya Sexauer of Camarillo, Calif., and Christa Sherman of of Spokane; and her grandparents, Sessil and Leala Sherman, and Abbey Conine, all of Hot Springs.
Helen Gross Missoula
A private gathering for Helen Oertel Gross, and the scattering of her ashes, will take place in the spring. Garden City Funeral Home in Missoula is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Winnemucca, Nev., Mrs. Gross died Friday. She was 83.
She was a former 15-year Mead resident, and moved to Missoula a year ago.
She was raised by her grandparents on a ranch 12 miles west of Conrad, Mont., and graduated from high school in Kellogg.
She completed business college in Butte, Mont., and worked primarily as a secretary for law, insurance and real estate offices. She had also worked as a secretary for the union carpentry program at the Curlew, Wash., Job Corps Center.
Survivors include one daughter, Karen Driessen of Missoula; one son, Mark Chestnutt of Spokane; one brother, Leslie Oertel of Conrad; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Missoula Humane Society or the Spokane Humane Society.
Ruth Taylor Spokane
Memorial service for Ruth Etta (Cory) Taylor, 85, is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at Millwood Community Presbyterian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Daisy, Wash., Mrs. Taylor died Sunday.
She graduated from Richland High School and married John Taylor in 1927.
She went to work at the Orchard Avenue Branch of the Spokane County Library when it opened, and she retired after 28 years. She later worked for the Postal Service.
She taught Sunday School at Millwood Community Presbyterian Church. Her husband preceded her in death.
She is survived by four daughters, Virginia Coppersmith and Doris Dean, both of Spokane, Margaret McKee of Colville, Wash., and Nancy McKenzie of Thompson Falls, Mont.; two sisters, Hazel Dewitt and Mable Rutherford, both of Spokane; 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ethel Kammerzell Tensed, Idaho
Visitation for Ethel Elizabeth Kammerzell, 89, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash. Service will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Elmore United Methodist Church, north of Potlatch, Idaho. Burial will follow at Freeze Cemetery near Potlatch.
Mrs. Kammerzell died Saturday at Clarkston (Wash.) Care Center. She was born in Amherst, Mass.
She received a teaching certificate from Cheney Normal School.
In 1928 she married Harvey Kammerzell, and they raised cattle near Farmington, Wash., for five years before moving to DeSmet, Idaho.
Mrs. Kammerzell taught school in Tensed, Princeton and Potlatch, Idaho, from 1945 until 1969, when she retired.
She was a member of Elmore United Methodist Church, Tensed Grange, Retired Teachers Association, Hiland Ladies Club and the Idaho Fiddlers.
Her husband died in 1993.
She is survived by one daughter, Dorry Turnbow of Clarkston; one son, Robert Kammerzell of Nelson, British Columbia; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Helen Putnam Coeur d’Alene
Graveside service for Helen L. Putnam, 70, will be today at 10:30 a.m. at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. Memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene. Mrs. Putnam, a lifetime resident of Coeur d’Alene, died Sunday.
She graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School and later worked at the school district office before working for Liberty National Life Insurance. She later worked for Evergreen Floral and was a homemaker and mother.
Mrs. Putnam was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and was a cancer care volunteer.
Survivors include her husband, Ray, and a son, Robert, both at home; two brothers, Eugene Hartman of Spokane and Harold “Bob” Hartman of Colfax, Wash.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Walter Wagner Spokane
Service for Walter E. Wagner, 92, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel at Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah, Wash. Burial will follow at Summit Valley Cemetery in Addy, Wash. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Wagner, who died Sunday, was born in Minnesota.
He was raised in Circle, Mont., and learned blacksmithing on the family farm.
He married Anna Marie Ridge in 1924 in Glendive, Mont. In 1930 they moved to Colville, Wash., where he farmed until she died in 1953.
In 1959 he married Helena Hartill, and they moved to Soap Lake, Wash. They moved to Chewelah in 1967.
He operated Walt’s Shop, a blacksmith shop, in both Soap Lake and Chewelah. He also worked in a sawmill and for Northwest Magnesite Co.
He was a founding member of the Chewelah Senior Citizens Club and was a member of the Lutheran Church.
His wife died in 1995.
He is survived by one daughter, Roseanna Nielsen of Seattle; one sister, Irene Memmer of Ephrata, Wash.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Helen Nicodemus Spokane
Memorial service for Helen Nicodemus, 87, is planned for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lilac Plaza. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Nicodemus, who died Saturday, was born in Centerville, Iowa.
She married Lester Nicodemus in 1929 in Des Moines, Iowa. The family moved to Spokane in 1952.
She had lived at Lilac Plaza for the past five years and participated in bazaars and card clubs there.
She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star.
Her husband, Lester, died in 1972.
Survivors include two daughters, Suzanne Leckie and Janice Eseke, both of Bayview, Idaho; one son, Ron Nicodemus of Spokane; one brother, Jack Fisher of Montana; 19 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Morris Laverne Vick Spokane
No service will be held for Morris Laverne Vick, 84, at his request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Vick, a 50-year Spokane resident, died Saturday. He was born in Canada.
He had been a member of the Ironworkers Union Local No. 14 since 1940.
He served in the Army during World War II with the 333rd Engineers. He was a member of North Hill Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Vick is survived by his wife of 47 years, Wanda; one sister, Irene of Missouri; and one brother, Leonard of Montana.
Maudie Reedy Spokane
Visitation for Maudie P. Reedy, 90, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with burial at Pines Cemetery.
Mrs. Reedy, who died Monday, was born in Putnam County, Mo.
She came to Spokane in 1941 from Fairview, Mont. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Bob Reedy; three sons, Don Lewis of Spokane, Bob Reedy Jr., of Carmichael, Calif., and Ted Reedy of Federal Way, Wash.; two sisters, Ruby Bucklin of Vancouver, Wash., and Beulah Rhoades of Miles City, Mont.; one brother, Robert Golphenee of Vancouver; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
June Mayer Coeur d’Alene
Memorial graveside service for June S. Mayer, 90, will be held later. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Mayer, the last surviving child of Spokane pioneer Samual Clark Sturman, died Sunday.
She was born in Maud, Wash., and attended Cheney Normal School, later teaching school in Eastern Washington.
She moved to Spokane from Kennewick in 1942 before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1986.
Mrs. Mayer enjoyed sewing and was a founding member of the Pasadena Park Homemakers Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony, in 1985. Survivors include three daughters, Donna Suko of Coeur d’Alene, and Mary Ann Birt and Carol Sue Turner, both of Modesto, Calif.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Jane Cage Spokane
Private service will be held for Jane Cage, 85. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Cage, who died Saturday, was born in Norway.
She was an 83-year Spokane resident and operated Frederic-Cage Studio in Spokane for many years.
She was a member of the Spokane Chapter of Washington State Photographers and the Professional Photographers of America.
She is survived by one brother, L.R. Lockert; and three sisters, Diane Carter, Lila Larson, and Dorothee Allen, all of Spokane.
Madeline Sutton Spokane
Memorial service for Madeline Y. Sutton, 80, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chester Community Church in Spokane. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Sutton, who died Monday, was born in Vanguard, Saskatchewan.
She graduated from British Columbia Bible Institute.
Mrs. Sutton had been a Spokane Valley resident since 1981. She formerly lived in eastern Montana and Saskatchewan.
She had been a public school teacher for 18 years.
She was a member Chester Community Church.
Mrs. Sutton is survived by her husband, Albert Sutton; one daughter, Dianne Kaatz of Spokane; six grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Etta Bentley Bellingham
Service for Etta Marie Bentley, 88, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jerns LeVeck Funeral Chapel in Bellingham. Her grandson, the Rev. John Bentley, will co-officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fairmount Memorial Park.
Mrs. Bentley, a former Spokane resident, died Sunday. She was born in Sioux Falls, S.D.
She had lived in Spokane for 50 years and moved to Bellingham eight months ago to be closer to her children.
Her husband, Ernest Bentley, died in 1973.
She is survived by three sons, Ernest Bentley of Bellingham, Edwin Bentley of Renton, Wash., and Curtis Bentley of Crossville, Tenn.; one daughter, Alice Bentley of Colville, Wash.; one brother, Elmer Powell of California; three sisters, Florence Carr of Spokane, Bernice Sebright of Michigan and Ruby Ott of California; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
