Herron Leads Honda Classic

Compiled From Wire Services

Without much wind, TPC Eagle Trace wasn’t much of a match for Tim Herron, who tied the course record with a 10-under-par 62 and took a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Honda Classic.

The PGA Tour rookie missed only one green all day, and atoned for it by holing a 20-foot chip on No. 18 to tie the record first set by Dan Pohl in the second round of the 1989 tournament.

Lee Rinker, who played in the afternoon when the wind picked up slightly, was two strokes back at 64.

Scott Verplank was another stroke back, followed by Nick Price, who holed a bunker shot on the par-5 10th hole for an eagle in shooting a 66.
