Mayor Would Legalize Camps

Compiled From Wire Services

Mayor Willie Brown has a simple solution to those illegal camps that have sprung up in San Francisco’s parks - make them legal.

Under the plan, the tent grounds would be barred from certain parks, including Golden Gate Park.

In addition, the tents couldn’t be set up near children’s playgrounds or other recreational facilities. Permits would be required, stays would be limited to just a few days, and anyone could apply.

Brown sent the proposal to city staff for evaluation.
