Huskies Get Past Trojans

Associated Press

Pacific-10

Mark Sanford scored 25 points and Todd MacCulloch had 14 points and eight rebounds Saturday as Washington beat Southern California 71-68 in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Trojans, who trailed most of the way and by as many as 17 points in the second half, pulled within 67-66 with 59 seconds left on a jump shot by Jaha Wilson.

Washington’s Jason Hamilton then made two foul shots with 48 seconds to go, extending the Huskies’ (16-11, 9-9 Pac-10) lead back to three points.

Senior guard Brandon Martin, playing his final game for the Trojans, made a pair of free throws with 30 seconds to play to pull USC within one point again. However, Sanford got behind the defense for a dunk with 16.3 seconds remaining to complete the scoring.

USC’s Stais Boseman missed a 3-point shot with about 5 seconds left that could have tied the game, and Washington’s Jamie Booker got the rebound and threw the ball downcourt. The ball was in the air as time expired.

UW is hoping for an NIT bid.

“This gets us to 16 wins, and we’ll see what happens,” Huskies coach Bob Bender said. “We’ll wait until (today). We’re happy to go anywhere.”

Even when the Huskies were on top by 17 points, at 54-37 with a little more than 13 minutes left, Bender was concerned.

“You expect in the last game of the season that, no matter what, they’re going to make a run,” he said. “We could have panicked when they had us on the ropes, but we didn’t. It was a good win, we needed that.”

Bryant Boston had nine points and Booker had seven rebounds and seven assists to go with three points for the Huskies, who outrebounded the Trojans 39-23.

Wilson and David Crouse led USC (11-19, 4-14) with 16 points each. Crouse also grabbed eight rebounds. Boseman had 14 points and Avondre Jones scored 12 for the Trojans, who lost their final 10 games.

The Trojans were 0-9 under interim coach Henry Bibby, who replaced Charlie Parker when Parker was abruptly fired Feb. 7.
