House Oks Tough Immigration Measure

From Staff And Wire Reports

The House approved Rep. Randy Tate’s “One Strike, You’re Out” immigration amendment, which would permanently deny U.S. entry to anyone caught trying to sneak into the country illegally.

“Simply said, if you don’t obey immigration laws, you will not get a green card. Illegal immigrants will be illegal forever,” said Tate, a freshman Republican from Washington state.

Critics said Tate’s proposal, approved on a voice vote Tuesday night, was too extreme - an attempt to grab newspaper headlines by cracking down on illegal immigration.

But Tate, a staunch conservative facing a tough re-election bid, said the permanent ban is necessary because existing U.S. policy has created a “revolving door” for illegal immigrants.
