Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: Thank you for letting Caroline Gentry from Indiana, and others as well, know that she is inviting disaster when she leaves her washer/ dryer on when no one is home. Several years ago, my husband and I purchased a very nice new washer. In less than a week of use, something caught on fire under the machine. Fortunately, we were home.

Right before the washer caught fire, my husband had suggested we run out and grab a bite for lunch, but I decided to wait until the washer had run through all its cycles.

We controlled the fire before the fire department responded to our call. Needless to say, we were extremely shaken by the experience.

Never, never leave the house while these appliances are in operation. You may not have a house when you come home! - Sylvia Inmon, Little Rock, Ark.
