Red Wings Net Trophy By Burying Avalanche

Igor Larionov had three assists and Mike Vernon posted his third shutout of the season Friday night as the Detroit Red Wings won their second straight President’s Trophy with a 7-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche at Detroit.

Keith Primeau had a goal and two assists while Steve Yzerman and Paul Coffey each had a goal and an assist as the Red Wings clinched the NHL’s best regular-season record.

The Red Wings scored three shorthanded goals - two on the same penalty.

James Black scored his first goal in two seasons and set up a game-clincher by Joe Murphy in leading Chicago past stumbling New Jersey.

Jeff Shantz and Gary Suter also scored as Chicago built a 3-0 lead and drove Martin Brodeur from goal midway through the second period.

The win snapped a five-game road losing streak for the Blackhawks and extended the Devils’ losing streak to three games.

Pierre Turgeon scored two goals and set up another to help Montreal earn its fourth straight victory by defeating Buffalo.

Turgeon, who played for the Sabres from 1987-92, opened the scoring in the first period and had an assist on Vincent Damphousse’s goal in the second period that turned out to the the game-winner.

The Canadiens, 6-0-1 in their last seven games, moved three points ahead of idle Boston (80-77) for fifth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Andrew Cassels scored at 12:23 of the third period to give Hartford a tie with Ottawa.

After killing a penalty early in the overtime, the Whalers enjoyed a one-man advantage for the final 1:42, but still couldn’t pull out the win.

Ottawa, which outshot Hartford 32-31, has the worst record in the NHL at 15-52-4.

Garry Valk had his first career hat trick and Paul Kariya scored twice to lead Anaheim past St. Louis for its sixth straight victory.

Guy Herbert stopped 43 shots for the Ducks, who led 3-0 after the first period on Valk’s first two scores and Paul Kariya’s 41st goal at :39 after a Blues turnover.

Newly-arrived Craig Janney scored two goals and assisted on two others as Winnipeg beat Philadelphia.

It was a dramatic turnaround for the Jets from Wednesday night’s 7-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks, who had just traded Janney for Winnipeg’s Darren Turcotte.

A goal by Owen Nolan early in overtime gave San Jose its victory over Calgary.

Nolan flipped in a puck from the crease area after Calgary goalie Rick Tabaracci failed to cover the rebound of a shot by Doug Bodger at 1:09 of the extra period.

Caloun, promoted to the Sharks from their Kansas City farm club, set the stage for overtime by tying it with just more than 7 minutes left in regulation.
