Senator Lobbies For Family That Lost Home During Floods

Compiled From Wire Services

An Orofino family that lost its home to protect the city during the February floods hopes U.S. Sen. Larry Craig’s intervention will help.

In a Wednesday letter, Craig urged Federal Emergency Management Agency Director James Lee Witt to find resources to reimburse Wayne and Cindy Wilson for their house.

The home was destroyed by the city of Orofino during the floods. It was feared the house would be swept into Orofino Creek, destroying a bridge or diverting floodwater into the city’s downtown area.

Craig offered several suggestions, including programs and grants from both FEMA and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The city acted under emergency authority and has claimed immunity. The family of five was left with an empty lot and a $66,000 mortgage.
