Triplett One Shot Back

Tommy Tolles, who has finished no worse than fifth in his last four tournaments, shot a 7-under-par 65 to share the first-round lead of the Shell Houston Open with Mike Springer.

The pair hold a one-stroke lead over former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett, Lee Janzen, David Duval and Mark Brooks at the Tournament Players Course at The Woodlands.

At Daytona Beach, Fla., Val Skinner took a one-stroke lead in the first round of the LPGA Sprint Titleholders Championship. Her bogey-free 67 gave her a one-stroke lead over Japanese rookie Mayumi Hirase, Dawn Coe-Jones and Jane Geddes.

U.S. Open champ Annika Sorenstam was in a large group at 3-under 69, as was Clarkston’s Robin Walton. Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, shot 71.
