Event Will Focus On Mining Pollution
The Inland Empire Lands Council is hosting a daylong event in Spokane today that is designed to teach the public about mining pollution in the Spokane-Coeur d’Alene watershed.
“Get the Lead Out!” will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. today at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive.
The event will feature panel discussions on watershed damage from mining and timber industries, highlighting opportunities for citizen activism to restore the watershed’s health.
Henry SiJohn, Coeur d’Alene Tribe council member, will be the keynote speaker.
Three field trips are scheduled for the afternoon along the Spokane River to learn about ecology and bird habitat.
Lunch is $5 per person. A $12 dinner, provided by Birkebeiner Brewery and Great Harvest Bread Co., and auction will be followed by music provided by the Seattle blues band the Sheetrockers.
The benefit auction will feature autographed books by Robert Redford; artwork by Harold Balazs, Stephen Lyman, David Govedare and Sally Pierone; outdoor equipment from Mountain Gear and Patagonia; and a Salmon River rafting trip from River Odysseys West.
