Wings, Pens Start Second Round With Wins

Sergei Fedorov scored his first playoff goal with 2:06 remaining Friday night, giving the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues in Game 1 of their second-round series.
Dino Ciccarelli and Darren McCarty also scored for Detroit, which had the league’s best record this season. Shayne Corson and Brett Hull scored for St. Louis. Hull’s goal moved him into a 15thplace tie with his father, Bobby, on the career playoff scoring list, each with 62.
The best-of-seven series continues Sunday at Joe Louis Arena, then moves to St. Louis for Games 3 and 4.

Pittsburgh Jaromir Jagr scored twice and set up Mario Lemieux’s game-winning goal as Pittsburgh won a shootout of the stars, beating New York in the opener of their second-round series.
Lemieux and Mark Messier, two of the three finalists for the Hart Trophy, which is awarded the NHL’s best player, each had a goal and an assist as the Penguins opened a 1-0 series lead against New York for the third time since 1989. Pittsburgh won the other two series.
The series resumes Sunday.
