Cheney Earns Top Seed Through Tiebreakers
After working through two tie-breaking formulas on Saturday, Cheney earned the No. 1 seed and a bye to the District 7-AA baseball tournament.
Following Saturday’s final regular-season game, Cheney, Colville, West Valley and East Valley finished tied for first place in the Frontier League with 12-4 records.
Using the tiebreaking procedure in the league handbook, the teams’ head-to-head competition revealed Cheney, Colville and WV with 5-4 records and EV at 3-6. EV, therefore, was given the No. 4 seed.
In head-to-head competition among the remaining three teams, Cheney was 4-2, Colville 3-3 and WV 2-4.
When districts begin Tuesday at Colville, No. 2 seed Colville will await the WV-EV winner. Tuesday’s survivor advances to a best-of-three series at Cheney, starting with a Saturday doubleheader.
In Saturday’s action, visiting WV swept EV 8-6, 8-5.
For WV, Jeremy Isherwood went 5 for 8 with five runs batted in on the day while James Eklund was 4 for 7.
Jason Phillipe of the Eagles ran his record to 7-1 while Isherwood went to 4-1 with a second-game win.
At Cheney, the Blackhawks forged a 10-2, 8-3 sweep of visiting Pullman (4-14).
The Blackhawks’ Tucker Urdahl struck out 12, and Colin Fiddes was 4 for 4 with two RBIs in the first game. In the nightcap, Matt Gaston scattered five hits for Cheney.
At Colville, Jason Spears (8-2) threw a two-hitter as the Indians beat visiting Clarkston 8-2 to salvage a doubleheader split. Clarkston won the opener 5-2 as J.D. Burns (5-2) hit two homers.
Boys soccer
The top seeds were uprooted again.
In district action, No. 4 Cheney ended No. 1 EV’s season with a 4-3 shootout victory, and No. 3 Deer Park/Riverside dumped No. 2 West Valley 2-1 in sudden death.
It’s the second consecutive year the top seeds bowed out.
At EV, Cheney received goals from Nick Reynolds, Nathan Gosse and Ryan Waller.
The match went into overtime when the Knights’ Tory Swenson tied the score at 3 with a goal at the 79-minute mark.
At WV, DP/R won the sudden death, 6-5, after a 4-4 shootout. WV outshot DP/R 28-14.
There was no scoring until the second half, when DP/R’s Seth McKay recorded a goal at the 53-minute mark. WV’s Shaun Nogle tied it at 1 a minute later.
DP/R will host Cheney on Tuesday at Riverside, tentatively at 5 p.m. The winner advances to state.
Softball
Colville swept visiting Riverside 7-2, 12-1.
In the second game, Colville’s Tarrah Brown threw her fifth no-hitter of the season and sister Heather Brown rapped three hits, including a two-run homer.
At EV, the Knights swept Clarkston 7-0, 7-0.
EV’s Rebecca Triplett struck out 11 and allowed one hit. In the second game, Tricia Stookey struck out five during a three-hitter.
On Friday, WV wrapped up the league title with a 17-2, 9-2 sweep of host Cheney. The Eagles’ Jennifer Robinson had five hits.
