Texas Pitchers Toss 2 Straight 1-Hitters

From Wire Reports

American League

The Texas Rangers became the first American League team in 79 years to pitch consecutive one-hitters Saturday as Roger Pavlik held Detroit to a fifth-inning home run in a 3-1 win over the Tigers in Detroit.

A day after Texas’ Ken Hill one-hit Detroit, retiring the last 26 batters he faced, Pavlik set down 14 straight Tigers before Mark Lewis hit a two-out homer in the fifth.

Hill and Pavlik enabled the Rangers to become the first A.L. team to pitch back-to-back one-hitters since the Washington Nationals one-hit the Chicago White Sox in consecutive games in 1917.

Pavlik (4-0) faced 28 batters - one more than the minimum - and retired the last 13 to end the game. He struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter in winning his fourth game in his fourth attempt.

The 40 consecutive batters retired by Hill and Pavlik set a club record.

Orioles 10, Brewers 5 Baltimore

Brady Anderson homered for the fourth time in three games and Roberto Alomar hit a grand slam as Baltimore defeated Milwaukee.

Anderson’s major league-leading 15th homer sparked a four-run first that gave Baltimore the lead for good. He also hit one against New York on Wednesday and two Friday against the Brewers.

It was the sixth time this season that Anderson opened the Orioles first inning with a homer, breaking the team mark set by Don Buford in 1971.

Athletics 5, Royals 2 Kansas City, Mo.

Jason Giambi homered and Oakland, despite an injury to third baseman Scott Brosius, beat Kansas City to end a four-game losing streak.

Brosius, batting .351 with eight homers and 21 RBIs, sustained a broken bone in his right arm when he was hit by a pitch from Mark Gubicza in the fourth.

Angels 5, Twins 2 Anaheim, Calif.

Jason Grimsley took a nohitter into the seventh and finished with a three-hitter, leading California over Minnesota for its fifth straight win.

White Sox 11, Yankees 5 New York

Frank Thomas drove in the tying run during a four-run eighth and Harold Baines hit a grand slam in the ninth as Chicago rallied.

Baines had five RBIs as the White Sox ended a four-game losing streak.

Bernie Williams hit a solo homer and Mariano Duncan had two RBIs for the Yankees, who had their winning streak ended at five games. It was the first loss for the Yankees in 15 games this season when leading after seven innings.

Red Sox 8-8, Jays 7-4 Boston

Boston won two games after winning just six of its first 25 as it finished a suspended-game victory, then beat Toronto in the second game.

Former Boston pitcher Frank Viola, coming back from a severe elbow injury, allowed four runs in the first inning of the regularly scheduled game. After Toronto cut the lead to 5-4, Bill Haselman hit a threerun homer, his first of the year, in the eighth.

In the completion of the suspended game, Boston survived homers by Alex Gonzalez and Joe Carter and a two-run single in the ninth by Shawn Green. Two rain delays lasting 3 hours, 43 minutes Friday night led to the suspension with the Red Sox ahead 6-1 after six.

Clearing the bases

Five Rangers - Juan Gonzalez, Will Clark, Dean Palmer, Kevin Elster and Ivan Rodriguez - are on pace to drive in at least 100 runs each this season. Texas has never had more than two players do so in the same year. … New York’s Mariano Duncan left the game with a sprained left groin muscle following his two-run double in the seventh.

Actor Kevin Costner watched the Orioles-Brewers game with Cal Ripken’s wife, Kelly, in the front row behind the screen.

Yankees owner George Steinbrenner’s horse, Diligence, finish ninth in the Kentucky Derby.
