Water Main Break Floods Subways

Associated Press

A century-old water main burst Saturday near Times Square, flooding streets and subway stations, and steering traffic away from the normally bustling hub.

There was so much water in the subway station nearest the pipe break that the platform was completely submerged and water was almost up the stairs to the street.

Water was 3 feet deep in stations more than a mile from the rupture, said Joe Hofmann, New York City Transit vice president. Power was shut off to several subway lines to prevent electric fires.
