Clemens’ Whiffs, Umps’ Muff Lift Sox

Associated Press

American League

Roger Clemens struck out 10 and received some help from an umpire’s bad call as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 Tuesday night in Milwaukee.

Clemens struck out 10 or more for the third consecutive start, the first time he’s accomplished that feat since 1987.

Clemens was aided in the fourth by second base umpire Larry Barnett, who ruled that right fielder Milt Cuyler caught Fernando Vina’s leadoff fly ball, although replays showed the ball clearly bounced into his glove as he dived.

Oakland, Calif.

Cone has aneurysm

David Cone, sidelined by numbness in his fingers, has a “slight aneurysm” in his right arm that is treatable.

The Yankees said tests at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center revealed the aneurysm, an abnormal ballooning of a blood vessel.

“What we are going to do is wait until we have the complete medical data, which I hope will be tomorrow (Wednesday),” Yankees GM Bob Watson said after New York’s 12-5 victory over Detroit. “I don’t think it’s life-threatening. They caught it early, which is what we were hoping they would do.”

Langston sidelined

One day after an MRI revealed a slight tear of cartilage in his right knee, left-hander Mark Langston was placed on the disabled list by the California Angels.

Langston will undergo arthroscopic surgery today to repair the knee, and Dr. Lewis Yokum expects him to be out of the rotation from six to eight weeks.

Clearing the bases

Jose Canseco went 1 for 4 and Kevin Mitchell went 0 for 4 as they began their rehabilitation assignments with the Pawtucket (R.I.) Red Sox. They plan to rejoin Boston in Milwaukee tonight… . Juan Gonzalez left Texas’ game against Toronto with a left leg injury. Gonzalez pulled up lame while running out a ground ball in the second.
