On Leek Road, which is near the Santa Ana Freeway outside Los Angeles, in June of 1979, two trucks collided. One was carrying 40 tons of carrots, the other about that much vegetable oil. An investigating officer called it “the world’s biggest carrot salad.”

Hollywood’s film factories cranked out an average of two motion pictures every day in 1939. What makes this a curiosity is the fact that television remains starved for material despite such enormous production in the past. No supply lines from anywhere yet have filled the maw to multiple TV channels. Writers wanted.
