Youth Program Still Has Room
There are still plenty of openings in a free summer youth leadership program sponsored by the Spokane Police Department.
Nearly 60 kids have signed up for the Leadership, Education and Development program, but coordinator Bob Walker said he wants at least 100 more.
The program is for students in the eighth, ninth and 10th grades who have been successful in their school or extracurricular life, Walker said.
Class officers, captains of sports teams and students with good grades are encouraged to join, he said.
“We would like the ones with leadership potential, the ones who have displayed the ability to take charge,” Walker said. “In the past, we have always focused on the kids who are at risk.”
The program, which is in its third year, was designed to reward students who have taken the lead in their schools and community and to help them develop their leadership skills.
Those chosen for the program will spend four days at the police training center.
They will be taught how to run meetings and give speeches, the role of citizens in government and how to set goals. There also will be physical fitness exercises.
