Flawless Ruby Mined In Burma May Be Largest

Compiled From Wire Services

A flawless ruby weighing about 9-1/2 pounds and said to be the world’s largest has been discovered in northern Burma, state-owned newspapers said Wednesday.

The 21,450-carat stone, measuring about five inches by seven inches, was found in the gem mining region of Mogok, 435 miles north of Rangoon, the newspapers said.

Gem experts said the ruby was flawless. No estimate of the stone’s value was given.

The Burmese ruby would easily surpass the largest listed in the Guinness Book of Records - an 8,500-carat, 5-1/2-inch stone carved to resemble the Liberty Bell and displayed by jeweler James Kazanjian of Beverly Hills, Calif., in 1985.

Burma is considered to be the world’s best source of high quality rubies.
