Cda Boys, Bonners Girls Win Golf Titles

Golf

Coeur d’Alene High School won the state Class A boys golf title on Saturday with a dramatic playoff victory over Idaho Falls.

The teams, tied after Friday’s first round at the Twin Falls Municipal course, were even again after Saturday’s 18 holes with team scores of 580.

That forced a one-hole playoff. Each team’s five golfers played and the top four scores were counted.

The Vikings fivesome produced a birdie and four pars. Idaho Falls had a birdie, two pars and two bogeys, giving CdA the title by 1 shot.

Kerry Latscha had CdA’s top score on Saturday with a 2-over-par 70. Rick Haymond, who fired a 68 on Friday, came back with a 72. Joe Christensen added a 72 and Joe Duplessis shot 75.

Boise’s Jess Hibler, who edged Haymond for medalist honors on Friday with a 67, carded a 65.

The Twin Falls girls cruised to the team title behind Sara Thompson. She shot 79 on Saturday, 3 strokes worse than her Friday score.

Lewiston finished fourth as Jacqueline Huff shot a 6-over-par 78.

Class B

Bonners Ferry’s girls captured the state title in a manner remarkably similar to Coeur d’Alene’s boys in Class A.

The Badgers’ team score of 580 (same as CdA’s) resulted in a tie with Weiser. That forced a one-hole playoff, which Bonners Ferry won by 1 shot (same as CdA).

Bonners Ferry’s Sarah Walter shot 88 on Saturday to go with Friday’s 82. Dana Robertson finished with a 103 and Brianna Hill shot 106.

Weiser’s Josey Edwards had the lowest two-day total (80-78-158).

Priest River placed fourth, seven shots behind Bonners Ferry and Weiser.

Abbie Stensland was the Spartans’ low scorer with an 87.

Priest River shot 641 for second place, behind Bishop Kelly’s 627.

The Spartans were paced by Luke Baker’s 77 and Justin Coleman’s 79.
