Pendleton Rallies Marlins Past Cubs
National League
Terry Pendleton hit an RBI double in the 11th inning as the visiting Florida Marlins rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 8-7 Sunday for their 11th win in 13 games.
Turk Wendell (3-1) walked Jeff Conine with one out and Pendleton followed with a double into the right-field corner.
Matt Mantei (1-0) pitched a scoreless 10th and Robb Nen, the Marlins’ seventh pitcher, finished for his 10th save in 11 chances.
Bret Barberie, in his first at-bat of the year, hit a two-run homer off Florida’s Jay Powell in the eighth, tying the game 7-7. Leo Gomez also homered for the Cubs.
Giants 1-6, Mets 0-2
San Francisco
Mark Gardner pitched a six-hitter and struck out 10 in another strong outing by a Giants pitcher as San Francisco completed a sweep by beating New York in the second game of a doubleheader.
Allen Watson (5-3) and Rod Beck combined on a four-hitter in the opener, shutting down the Mets one day after New York scored 14 runs.

Los Angeles
Jim Eisenreich drove home the winning run in the ninth inning with his fourth hit of the game, and Philadelphia beat Los Angeles to stop the Dodgers’ five-game winning streak.
Kevin Stocker hit a leadoff single against Scott Radinsky (0-1) and pinch-hitter Kevin Jordan sacrificed. One out later, Eisenreich grounded an opposite-field single between shortstop and third.
Padres 4, Expos 3
San Diego
Luis Lopez, who nearly caught Darrin Fletcher’s tying single in the top of the eighth, hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning as San Diego beat Montreal, ending the Expos’ 46-day run atop the N.L. East.
The Expos, who finished last in the N.L. East in 1995, 24 games behind Atlanta, dropped a half-game behind the World Series champion Braves.

Jeff Bagwell hit a two-out, two-run single, capping a seesaw ninth inning and rallying Houston over Pittsburgh.
Bagwell hit a two-run homer, his 13th, off reliever Jason Christiansen in the fifth to give Houston a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Bill Spiers was hit by a pitch and Bagwell hit the next pitch over the center-field fence.

Atlanta
Fred McGriff hit the 300th homer of his career and John Smoltz became the first nine-game winner in the majors, leading Atlanta over Cincinnati.
McGriff, on pace for the best season of his brilliant career, went 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs, capping off the day with a seventh-inning, two-run homer that brought him to the milestone.
McGriff became the 71st player to reach 300 home runs.

Ellis Burks homered in his third straight game as Colorado routed St. Louis and sent Andy Benes to his seventh straight loss.
Clearing the bases
Mike Blowers of Los Angeles, who entered the series with Philadelphia batting .200, had his second three-hit game in four days… . Pittsburgh third baseman Jeff King is 1 for 19 in his last six games and has only four hits in his last 44 at-bats… . Atlanta beat Cincinnati for the 11th straight time, including a four-game sweep in last year’s N.L. playoffs.
