Canseco’s Homers Spark Red Sox

Associated Press

American League

Wil Cordero had a bases-clearing double in Boston’s season-high, seven-run third inning and Jose Canseco hit two two-run homers Monday night as the Red Sox rolled to a 16-4 victory over the visiting Oakland Athletics.

Mo Vaughn tied Cleveland’s Albert Belle for the league lead with his 17th homer and Bill Haselman added a solo homer in his first four-hit game as the Red Sox collected nine extra-base hits in a 21-hit attack.

Cordero had to be helped from the field in the ninth inning when George Williams slid into the second baseman on a force play. Cordero was favoring his right knee as he was helped off by two teammates.

Canseco had his first multiple-homer game with Boston and the 24th of his career when he hit a two-run shot off Buddy Groom in the fifth to make it 13-1.

Royals 5, Blue Jays 4

Kansas City

Chris Haney broke another Kansas City losing streak, stopping Toronto for his third straight victory.

Haney (3-4), who beat Texas in his last start to end a four-game losing streak, broke a more modest twogame losing streak this time for the Royals, who had lost six of eight.

In 8-1/3 innings, he allowed four runs on seven hits, striking out four while not walking a batter.

Brewers 3, Twins 2

Minneapolis

Ricky Bones allowed one earned run over seven-plus innings and Chuckie Carr drove in two runs and scored another as Milwaukee swept a four-game series from Minnesota.

It was the fifth straight win for the Brewers, while the Twins have lost four straight and 12 of 16.

Bones (3-6) gave up two runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out three. Mike Fetters pitched the ninth for his sixth save.

Frank Rodriguez (3-5) gave up three runs and nine hits in eight innings, walked two and struck out two.

Orioles 13, Angels 1

Baltimore

Roberto Alomar and Bobby Bonilla both homered and drove in four runs for Baltimore in a win over California.

Brady Anderson also homered for the Orioles, who have won eight of 10.

Baltimore had 17 hits, including three by Luis Polonia and two by Alomar, who raised his major league-leading batting average to .389.

David Wells pitched seven strong innings to earn his first victory in five starts since April 16. Wells (3-3) allowed one run, four hits and four walks.

Rex Hudler homered for the last-place Angels, who have lost seven of eight.

Gooden honored

New York Yankees pitcher Dwight Gooden, who threw his first career no-hitter against Seattle, was chosen American League player of the week.

Gooden struck out five and walked six in a 2-0 win over the Mariners last Tuesday night. It was the first Yankees’ no-hitter since Jim Abbott threw one against Cleveland in 1993.
