Churches Rally With Flood Help
A new church-led disaster-response group will continue mopping up after last winter’s floods.
The Inland Northwest Interfaith Disaster Response was organized to help people in North Idaho and Eastern Washington who are still struggling to repair February’s flood damage.
“There are folks in Waitsburg who still need mud-shoveling,” says Scott Cooper, a board member. “There’s a lady in Benton City who needs her house razed.”
The group will take care of flood-related needs that weren’t met by the Federal Emergency Management Agency or the Red Cross.
The ecumenical group plans to organize local church-goers to clean up flood damage, and to help people request money through the Washington Association of Churches.
The group’s office is located at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, N1620 Monroe. It opens with a $25,000 budget, and a new director will be hired soon.
The group plans to continue through the end of 1997.
