Milwaukee Stops Cleveland, Belle

Albert Belle’s 21-game hitting streak, the longest in the majors this season, ended Wednesday night when he struck out with two runners on base to finish the Milwaukee Brewers’ 10-8 win over the Cleveland Indians in Cleveland.

Belle went 0 for 3 with a sacrifice fly and a walk. With runners on first and third, he took a called third strike on a 3-2 pitch from Mike Fetters for the last out.

Geronimo Berroa hit three solo home runs, leading rookie Steve Wojciechowski (5-0) and Oakland over New York.

Lyle Mouton’s two-run triple in the bottom of the 11th lifted Chicago to a win over Toronto.

Roberto Alomar raised his batting average to .400, going 4 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs as Baltimore beat California.

Joe Vitiello hit two homers and Kansas City sent Detroit to its eighth straight loss.

Dean Palmer and Warren Newson hit consecutive homers in the sixth as Texas rallied from a two-run deficit, then held on to beat Minnesota.

Clearing the bases

Frank Thomas has reached base safely in all of Chicago’s 44 games this season. .. The Rangers’ Kevin Gross was scratched from his scheduled start against Kansas City on Saturday because of a strained ligament in his back. .. The Rangers had been 26-0 when leading after eight innings until Minnesota rallied in the ninth for Tuesday’s 4-3 victory. .. Twins outfielder Kirby Puckett was examined by Dr. Bert Glaser at the Retinal Institute of Maryland in Baltimore. The team announced he is progressing, but still unable to play.
