Council Will Review Housing Alliance Grant

From Staff And Wire Reports

At its meeting Tuesday, the Spokane City Council considers whether to continue giving local tax dollars to the Northwest Fair Housing Alliance.

The city’s community development board favors a competitive bidding process instead of simply sending the housing alliance a $25,000 annual grant to educate the public on fair housing issues.

Several council members maintain the housing alliance is the best qualified recipient and shouldn’t have to compete for the cash every year.

Others suspect the non-profit, Spokane-based organization may focus too much on enforcement instead of education.

The housing alliance has become increasingly controversial since it began filing discrimination complaints against landlords and real estate agents during the past year.

Tuesday’s council meeting begins at 3:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall. , DataTimes
