Obituaries

Eleanor Buchanan Portland

Memorial service for Eleanor M. Buchanan, a former longtime Spokane resident, was Saturday at Sellwood Baptist Church in Portland. Private burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park in Spokane.

Miss Buchanan was born in Kaslo, British Columbia. She died May 5. She was 98.

She graduated from North Central High School.

She was the junior page editor of the Pacific Northwest Farm Quad, now called Western Farmer Stockman magazines, and retired in 1963. She worked for Cowles Publishing Co. for more than 46 years.

She also started the Boys and Girls pages of the farm papers and edited the Old Songs and Original Poems departments.

She moved to Portland in 1968.

There are no surviving family members.

Orin Walter Everett, Wash.

Graveside service for Orin Charles Walter, 87, will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Walter, who was born in Montana, died Friday.

He was a past resident of Coeur d’Alene and maintained a summer home east of Squaw Bay on Lake Coeur d’Alene for many years. He has lived in the Everett area for 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte; son, Neil Walter of Coeur d’Alene; two daughters, Nancy Brueher of St. Maries, and Nicki Loomer of Australia; two brothers, Irby Walter of Bonners Ferry, and Wally Walter of Oregon; three sisters, Hazel Meyers of Coeur d’Alene, Beatrice Eakin of Oregon, and May Osmundson of California; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Marie Meyers Greenacres

Visitation for Marie J. Meyers, 87, is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with burial Mass planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Trentwood.

Mrs. Meyers, who died Wednesday was born in Coeur d’Alene.

She graduated from North Central High School and lived in Spokane for 75 years.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 51 Ladies Auxiliary.

Her husband of 64 years, Norman Meyers, died in 1992.

She is survived by one son, Delbert Meyers; one daughter, Jean McKinney, both of Spokane; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Development Fund.

Richard Bauman Spokane

Memorial service for Richard D. “Dick” Bauman, 64, will be at 10 a.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Bauman died Tuesday.

He graduated from North Central High School and served in the Marines during the Korean War. He was a survivor of the Chosin Reservoir battle in Korea.

He retired from Kaiser Aluminum in Trentwood in 1987 and from Hite Crane and Rigging in 1994.

Mr. Bauman is survived by his wife, Pamela Bauman; two sons, Scott Bauman of Spokane, and Brett Bauman of Phoenix; one stepson, Paul Carlin of San Francisco; one stepdaughter, Kimberly Carlin of Pullman, and six grandchildren.

Etta Mae Blutcher-Brown Spokane

Graveside service for Etta Mae Blutcher-Brown, 74, was Friday at Riverside Memorial Park Mrs. Blutcher-Brown died Tuesday. She was born in Beggs, Okla.

She had lived in Cusick, Wash., and Spokane since the mid-1940s.

She worked as a restaurant cook.

She is survived by two sons, Sam Brown of Anchorage, Alaska, and Tom Brown of Spokane; three daughters, Tami Carpenter of Plummer, Idaho, and Georgia Knight and Lisa Hutto, both of Bellevue, Neb.; three brothers, Dago, Pete and Charlie Thornburg, all of Oklahoma; one sister, Maggie Romine of Beggs; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Conrad Cox Ione, Wash.

Memorial service for Dr. C. Conrad Cox, 59, is set for 3 p.m. today at the family home in Ione. A service will be held at a later date in Idaho Falls, Idaho, followed by burial at Taylor, Idaho cemetery. Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Cox died Thursday from cancer. He was born in Idaho Falls. He graduated from Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls and from Utah State University.

He received a doctorate of dental surgery from Northwestern University in Chicago.

He served in the United States Public Health Service in Sitka, Alaska, for three years.

He practiced dentistry in Cheney and Chewelah, Wash., until 1978, when he opened a dental practice in Metaline Falls, Wash.

He was a member of Toastmasters, the Rotary Club, the Lions Club, the American Legion, 40/8, and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was also a member in the Washington State and National dental societies.

A Mastership Award from the Academy of General Dentistry will be award to him posthumously in June.

He is survived by his wife, Karin; four daughters, Peggy McFarland of Lakeview, Ore., Joy Huffman of Federal Way, Wash., Jenny Lytle of Sunnyside, Wash., and Heather Cox of Spokane; two sons, David Cox of Ione, and Matt Cox of Almira, Wash.; his mother, Norma Cox of Idaho Falls; four brothers and three sisters., and 19 grandchildren.

Kenneth ‘Red’ Whitacre, Sr. Spokane

No service will be held for Kenneth E. “Red” Whitacre, Sr., at his request. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Whitacre, 67, died Thursday. He was born in Ames, Iowa.

He had lived in Spokane for 45 years, and worked as a mechanic for Appleway Chevrolet for many years. He retired in 1990.

Mr. Whitacre is survived by his wife of 40 years, Donna Whitacre; three daughters, Jan Overhauser, Barbara Murphy and Debra Whitacre, all of Spokane; four sons, Guy Whitacre of Spokane, Steve Whitacre of Bellingham, and Ken and Scott Whitacre, both of Barrysville, Ark.; two sisters, Jean Russell of Ohio, and Judy Stoner of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James House Spokane

Private graveside service will be held for James E. House, 57. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. House, who was born in Marietta, Ga., died Tuesday.

He had lived in Spokane since 1983 and had worked in quality control in the computer industry.

He is survived by his wife, Susan House.

Katheryne Severn Spokane

Memorial service for Katheryne E. Severn, 76, is planned for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Shadle Park Presbyterian Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Severn, who died Wednesday, was born in Hunters, Wash.

She was a 50-year Spokane resident, and was a charter member of Shadle Park Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Severn is survived by her husband of 59 years, Thomas Severn; one daughter, Laura Russnogle of Gresham, Ore.; three sons, Dwight Severn of Northbrook, Ill., Dwayne Severn of San Diego, and Richard Severn of Spokane; one brother, Amos Johnston of Phoenix; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Chronic Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Mary L. Chronic, 83, will be held at a later date. Burial will take place at the Westmond Cemetery in Cocolalla, Idaho. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Chronic, who was born in Cocolalla, died Wednesday.

She moved to Spokane in 1936 and was a member of the Spokane Unitarian Church.

She moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1992.

Mrs. Chronic was preceded in death by her husband, Ryder, in 1989.

Survivors include a son, Ryder “Bud” Chronic of Colville, Wash.; daughter, Kathy Van Oerle of British Columbia, Canada; two brothers, Charles Sanborn of Coeur d’Alene, and William Sanborn of Blanchard, Idaho; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Frank Riggs Dalton Gardens

Service for Frank M. Riggs, 68, will be today at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Riggs, who was born in Montana, died Wednesday from cancer.

He moved to Hayden Lake in 1937 from Wyoming and worked as a mechanic/supervisor at Kaiser Aluminum’s Trentwood plant for 34 years.

He lived in Dalton Gardens at the time of his death.

Mr. Riggs was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene and the local Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, Eagles Lodge and Masonic Lodge Kootenai No. 24.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Joanne; two sons, Ron and Jack Riggs, both of Coeur d’Alene; two daughters, Kathy Seward and Sandee Riggs, both of Coeur d’Alene; three brothers, Bob and Jerry Riggs, both of Post Falls, and Jim Riggs of Hayden Lake; sister, Eileen Pierce of Spokane; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

B. Vincent Tibbets Sandpoint

Service for B. Vincent Tibbets, 95, will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Sandpoint Seventh-day Adventist Church. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tibbets, who was born in Indiana, died Tuesday.

He grew up in Michigan where he graduated from high school and later the Academy of Emmanuel Missionary College in 1926.

He later worked in Cuba and taught Spanish as well as doing evangelistic work for the Indiana Conference and the East Michigan Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He also studied hydrotherapy at the Adventist Sanitarium and later pastored an Adventist church in Reno, Nev., and directed the youth program He had lived in New Mexico, California and Colorado before moving to Sandpoint in 1974.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie.

Survivors include three daughters, Lovina Short of Utah, Marian Lounsbury of Colorado, and Marjorie Cooke of Sandpoint; two brothers, Kenneth and Ivan Stonebrook; sister Esther Pomeroy; and four grandchildren.

Ruth Schermer Spokane

Memorial service for Ruth L. Schermer, 71, is set for 2 p.m. June 2 at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Schermer, who was born in Cudahy, Wis., died Tuesday.

She graduated from the Milwaukee (Wis.) School of Nursing. She moved to Spokane in 1947 and worked for Sacred Heart Medical Center as a registered nurse. She also worked for the West Valley School District before retiring in 1987.

She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Her husband of 45 years, John Schermer, died in 1992.

Mrs. Schermer is survived by three daughters, Karen Nelson and Elaine Cooper, both of Seattle, and Sharon Schermer of Spokane; one son, Gary Schermer of Bothell, Wash.; one brother, Howard Kennedy of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Pearl Bernhardt of West Bend, Wis.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Marjorie Adams Spokane

A private family gathering was held for Marjorie Adams, 86.

Born in Thornton, Wash., Mrs. Adams, died Tuesday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 67 years.

She is survived by her husband, Jack; one son, Keith Adams of Yakima; one daughter, Janet Hafner of Spokane; five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Senia Allen Coeur d’Alene

At her request, no service is planned for Senia Melvina Allen, 89. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Allen, who was born in Texas, died Thursday.

She moved to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1929 from Moscow and was a homemaker. Survivors include two sons, Gerald Allen of Kingston, Idaho, and Gordon Allen of Yakima, Wash.; three daughters, Jean Stewart of California, Lois Summers of Rathdrum, and Neoma Allen of Colfax, Wash.; sister, Francis Oleson of Coeur d’Alene; brother, Herman Dustman of Arizona; 22 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
