Connell Wins Another Crown

Connell, playing like a team that has been there and done that before, defended its State AA-A slowpitch softball title Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park by drilling Lynden Christian 11-0 in a title-game mismatch.
The Eagles, who finished 22-1, supported the three-hit pitching of junior Alesha Booker with a 17-hit attack that produced five third-inning runs and three more scores in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
Camella Wahl ripped a two-run home run to highlight Connell’s big third inning and Christine Smith and Taneil Wells each stroked three singles.
Nicki Quinton added a double for the Yakima Valley League champions.
In the consolation game, Lakewood scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Nooksack Valley 8-6.
Connell, which has made it to the finals each of the last five years, outscored its three opponents in this year’s state tournament by a total of 39-8.
In early action Saturday, Nooksack Valley earned a berth in the consolation finals by thumping Royal 9-4 as Halli Lentz pounded out a run-scoring double and triple.
Lakewood did the same by outscoring Quincy 26-15 in a wild losers’ bracket semifinal that featured 46 hits and eight errors.
