Moran Fifth, Whitten Sixth At State Tennis Tournament

Ryan Moran of Mead finished fifth at the State AAA tennis tournament after losing 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Geoff Mayes in Tacoma on Saturday.

Moran lost in the semifinals to No. 1 seed and eventual champion Jeremy Berman of Newport 6-4, 7-6.

Mead’s doubles team of Brett Kaiser and Eric Donovan were eliminated in the consolation bracket by Joe and Justin Sleasman of Central Kitsap 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Mead finished tied for fifth in the team standings with Columbia River.

In girls matches, University’s Leslie Whitten eliminated Mead’s Amy Fong 0-6, 7-5, 6-2. Whitten then lost to Sarah Ust of Eastlake 6-1, 6-1, to finish sixth. Darcy Ruemping and K.C. Richards of Ferris finished fourth, beating Eisenhower’s Kirsten Bounds and Elly Colvin 6-1, 6-2.

AA softball

In Yakima, West Valley and Colville each won once in the consolation bracket before getting bounced.

WV beat Gig Harbor 3-0 before losing to Capital 4-1. Kate Waldron’s home run was West Valley’s only run in the loss.

Colville beat Seattle Prep 7-0 behind Mandy Lawson’s and Brandy Simpson’s three hits. Colville then lost to Lindberg 10-4.
