Huskies Bow 6-4 In Softball Final

Jenny Dalton hit a three-run homer in the first inning Monday to lead Arizona to its fourth national championship with a 6-4 win over Washington in the NCAA World Series softball tournament in Columbus, Ga.

Pitcher Carrie Dolan (35-6) picked up the victory for the Wildcats (58-9), giving up 11 hits and striking out four. Heather Meyer (25-4) took the loss for top-ranked Washington (59-9).

The Huskies scored their runs in the bottom of the fourth. Michelle Church singled in Jenny Cline; Mindy Williams singled in Becky Newbry; Jeanine Giordano scored on an error; and pinch hitter Leah Francis singled in Williams for the final run.

Dalton set a series record by scoring seven runs in the tournament.

UW had 47 hits in four games, breaking the record of 43 set by UCLA in 1992.

Golf

Washington golfers made their mark in the American Junior Golf Association Girls Championship at Tucson, Ariz.

Kelli Kamimura of Burlington, Wash., shot a women’s course record 3-under-par 68 for a 218 and come-from-behind win in the 54-hole tournament.

Britney Holt of Spokane put together a consistent 79-79-78 for a 236 and 21st place, and Hillary Prugh of Spokane shot an improving 99-83-79 for 261.
